In the 3rd or 4th century, a young Christian girl was buried in the catacombs of Rome. Her burial place was marked with the inscription "Pax tecum Filumena" ("Peace to you, Philomena") along with symbols indicating that she was a virgin and a martyr. After her relics were discovered in 1802, many miracles began to be reported.
