by Brother Ernest, C.S.C.
Born in the Navarre region of Spain in 1506, Francis Xavier was one of the founding members of the Society of Jesus. He was a carefree young man ready to take his place in the world as a professor in a university until God sent Ignatius Loyola into his life. He was ordained a priest in 1537 and lived a life filled with prayer and penance to win souls for heaven. As a Jesuit priest, Francis was sent as a missionary to India. He undertook this mission with a great zeal to win souls for Christ. For more than 10 years, Francis faced dangerous travel conditions, learned new languages, and fearlessly preached the gospel to thousands of people in India and Japan. His courage and complete faith in God won many converts to the Catholic Church. Reading this story about Saint Francis Xavier teaches us what is important in life, choosing to do God's Will in all things and placing complete trust that He will help us when everything seems hopeless. Saint Francis Xavier loved God and the impossible became possible.
