In 1812, when Louis Braille was only 3 years old, he was blinded by an accident in his father's workshop. His family wanted him to still get an education so they sent him to a school for the blind in Paris. He studied music and became the organist at St Anne's Church in Paris. Later he developed the Braille system of reading which used raised dots to form letters and words.
