The pious pilgrim, who ascends the Holy Stairs meditating on the sufferings of Jesus performs a devotional exercise most agreeable to Our Lord and most salutary for his soul. In fact, Saint Alphonsus of Ligouri asserts that of all devotions, none rejoices the heart of God more, or does more good to the soul than the devotion to the Saviour’s Passion. That staircase sanctified by the Savior’s footsteps is still in existence; it is publicly venerated in Rome where it was transferred from Jerusalem through the care of Empress Helena about the year 326. It is of white Tyrian marble and has 28 steps.
